Sinful Woman

My interpretation of her story is taken from Luke 7:36-50. Similar stories can be found in Matthew 26:6-13,
Mark 14:3-9, and John 12:1-11.

This story is one of my favorites, because it so clearly displays God's love for us, but it can become confusing because there is a version of it told in all four Gospels. My story comes from Luke because it clearly gives a different message than the other three. The others seem to point to Mary, sister of Lazarus, anointing Jesus' feet. It seems to be done out of love in preparation for Jesus' impending death.

However, to me, the Luke account seems different. The woman is defined as "one who had lived a sinful life." Haven't we all lived a sinful life? Don't we all have things in our lives that we don't want to share with others? I certainly do. That's why this story is so special to me. Jesus knew this woman's sorted past, but He didn't focus on that. He focused on her actions – her willingness to make herself vulnerable – by falling at his feet, washing them out of love, and offering her only gift, her precious oil. That's what Jesus wants from us, our willingness to fall at His feet and offer ourselves, and our lives to Him.
