Potiphar's Wife

Her story is found in Genesis, Chapter 39.

I was in the midst of creating new characters to accompany Mary of Magdala – had it all figured out. It was going to be Eve and Miriam. But I was in a creative wilderness. Couldn't come up with anything. I knew the premise of Eve, but Miriam – it was like looking into a mirror and getting no reflection – nothing was coming. Well, that's if I don’t include God in the process! One day I was doing my daily scripture reading (Oh how I wish it actually took place daily! – but I'm trying). I was reading the 39th chapter of Genesis, and there was Potiphar's Wife. Oh, my word – she just jumped off the pages at me! What a deliciously wicked woman, and how wise Joseph. This story screamed to be told. So, Miriam is on the shelf for another day, and Potiphar's Wife became the character to go with Eve and Mary of Magdala!

Here is a woman we love to hate. She is spoiled and self-centered and it is through her story we can see just how low sin can take us. Nothing shames this woman. But why would it? She doesn't have a moral compass. Don't we live in a culture much like this? People live in luxury, consider only themselves, seeming to have no shame. It is Joseph who teaches us that we must turn away from sin – even run from it and gives us a beacon of hope!

There is no video clip of Potiphar's Wife currently available.
